This is a vintage Winchester No. 4987 socket chisel, made in the USA during Winchester Repeating Arms Co., Hardware Divisionhardware period (circa 1920s). It has a 1 inch wide beveled-edge blade and measures about 8.5 inches overall with the handle installed. These chisels were produced for Winchester by top American makers of the era, and they’re well known for high-quality steel. The blade still shows the original WINCHESTER / TRADE MARK / MADE IN U.S.A. stamp. The handle is not original, just one that fits the socket well. Condition notes: Blade width: 1 inch Overall length: approx. 8.5 inches Good solid socket, no cracks Some surface pitting and normal wear from age Replacement handle A nice early Winchester tool for use or collecting, and these don’t turn up very often in this size.

With over 76 years of life experience and a passion for woodworking, I’ve spent decades collecting, restoring, and working with antique hand tools, mostly hand planes . I'm an Army Vet. (1967-1969) and married with 2 children. I'm also a avid gardener. I have a degree in Forestry from S.I.U. although I only worked in the industry for 6 weeks. I'm retired from the coal mines and also the Post Office. I live in Southern Illinois near Carbondale. I love to hunt and fish. I live on 30 with a 9 acre strip mine lake in front of the house. My work shop includes a Delta Unisaw , a Grizzley 17" band saw and a DeWalt 735 planer. I have many hand planes including a very nice Stanley #2 type 7
