Details

his listing is for a vintage W. Butcher Cast Steel chisel, measuring 1-1/2 inches wide with an overall length of about 13 inches including the handle. W. Butcher was a well-known Sheffield maker active in the mid-1800s, and their cast-steel edge tools are prized for taking a fine, long-lasting edge. This chisel has the classic W. BUTCHER / CAST STEEL stamp, still clear and readable. The blade has age-appropriate patina from more than a century of use, but the steel is solid with no cracks or chips. The back can be flattened and the edge sharpened for use, or it can be left as a collectible piece. The handle appears to be the original period handle. It has a visible split from age, but it’s tight and still holding. Some buyers choose to repair or replace, others keep it as-found. Specs Maker: W. Butcher, Sheffield Marking: W. BUTCHER / CAST STEEL Blade Width: 1-1/2" Overall Length: Approx. 13" Handle: Original, split but intact Type: Bench / paring chisel, wide pattern Condition Good vintage condition with honest wear. Patina on the blade, some pitting away from the edge, nothing that affects its ability to be sharpened and used. Handle shows age but is stable. Notes These wide Butcher chisels don’t show up often, especially with readable stamps. A solid piece either for a user kit, restoration, or a Sheffield edge-tool collection. Shipping Ships fast and well-packed.
