Union No. 138. Knuckle Block Plane . Knuckle Joint Lever, 6 inches long, 1 3/4 inch Cutter
Mouth adjustment cam is stamped patented applied for.
Lateral is stamped Patent 8.3.97 . The Union No. 138 was Union’s answer to the popular Stanley No. 18 and No. 19 knuckle-joint planes. Its most recognizable feature is the rounded, polished lever cap that snaps into place, eliminating the need for a traditional thumb screw. This design allows the user's palm to rest comfortably on the back of the plane during use. The plane is designed for fine finishing work and end-grain planing. The adjustable throat (mouth) allows the user to close the gap for whisper-thin shavings or open it up for heavier stock removal. . Note a couple apologizes, a very short blade, although I believe it is original to the plane, and a small chip behind the mouth. This is perfect as a collector as it is, or find an aftermarket blade and set this one on the side when using a a collector piece. . This is a great block plane for anyone who wished to use an older Union #138 as an everyday user. It will performance well once a replacement blade is found. . https://www.timetestedtools.net/2026/02/22/when-to-use-an-aftermarket-hand-plane-blade/ . (My #138-032523-4)
