Details

This is an ultra rare opportunity to purchase a unique collector's item from the Sestroretsk Tool Factory in Russia. This tiny woodworking bench plane is in excellent condition and would immediately be a centerpiece talking point of any collection. These planes, especially in this condition, are available for sale far less than a Stanley No. 1 and are considered even more rare.

Manufactured in the USSR Sestoretsk factory during the 1940's, this is an unheard of earlier version of this plane with a pale green finish on the cast iron body and hardwood handles with original factory varnish, held down by their signature split nut screw heads. Later, less durable versions of these Soviet era planes would have had cheaper, and often hollow, plastic handles. The body of this plane also features the distinct "B" in a hexagon logo that the Sestroretsk factory is known for. The blade steel for this model comes from the Peugeot Tool Corp (France) and is some of the hardest in the world, so it will hold an edge like none other.

One of the most interesting and unique features of this particular example is found on the screw cap that holds the blade in place. It features "USSR" cast into the front facing side and "1/4" on the back. I have seen a few of these planes, but never seen one with this casting.

There are no issues with this plane that would affect functionality...No cracks in the body or mouth, handles and screw cap all loosen as expected and tighten firmly in place. As shown in the pictures, there is some flaking of the varnish on the handles.

The hand plane measures approximately 5-13/16" in length, 1-3/16" wide, and has a blade width of 1-5/16" wide. When I compare it to a bronze Lie-Nielsen Number 1 plane, it is identical in length and only slightly wider.

See pictures for details. Let me know if you have any questions.
