Stanley No 5 Jack Type 17

$52.00

Details

Stanley Bailey No 5 Jack plane. Cleaned, bottom flattened and sharpened. Left the patina on the sides. The top coat on the knob and tote were mostly gone, so I redid them deep red.

It's a type 17 from 1942 based on the "442" - Q4 1942 - stamp on the iron. Type 17's vary in features given the way Stanley would use up stocks of older parts and WWII material constraints. This one has the frog adjustment screw. The knob and tote are hardwood with the steel screw not rosewood with the brass hourglass nuts. The lever cap has the patent on the back like a type 16 would. The depth adjuster is gutta percha not brass. It's only a 1/2 ounce heavier than my SW Type No 5.

See the pictures. There is a chip out of one corner of the lever cap. The tote has a repair. Couple of scratches on the sole but that should not affect things since it's away from the mouth - call it corrugated-lite. Yes, the back of the iron is that shinny.

Happy to answer questions. If you really want a brass adjuster, buy it and then message me immediately and I can swap it.

Edited 6/22: I realized I made a mistake in the original description when I said it had the brass hourglass nuts for the knob and tote, I had it confused with a different type 17 I've been working on. Adjusted the price based on the correct info.

Long time hobby woodworker. Most of that has been as a power tool user but in the last several years I've taken up hand tools and love it. Also found that I really like putting old iron back into service.
