Stanley Defiance Bench Plane, I think it's #1244. It's a #4 size and was Stanleys more economical line of planes. It does not have a lateral adjuster, you adjust it like the old wooden planes, with a hammer. Oh the frog is fixed on these Defiance Planes.
I lapped the sole, it still has some hollow spots under the frog and tote. I got tired, it was pretty uneven, but should work just fine now, or finish up if you want it prefect flat.
I also flattened the back of the iron and sharpened it free handed, it's nice and sharp, but you can't shave frog hairs with it.
I fixed this plane up just as I would my user planes, I get the sole flat enough, the iron flat and sharp enough and I have no issues for what I do.
This would make someone a good starter plane if you wanted to dabble in the world of lateral-less planes. Or if you wanted to start a collection of the lesser known Stanley planes.
Keep watch I have about 20 more planes to fix up and list. I think I have a #3 and #5 sized Defiance also, I don't remember now..

Selling since November 2024
Retired Archaeologist now working for city of Lexington Engineering Dept. Have been a carpenter and woodworking for some time, just switched over to hand tools several years ago. But now my health has changed, I have no kids and if Gods will, will be retiring and moving to Philippines in the next 5 Years. So I am slowly selling off tools (and other things) that I know I will not be hauling across the world. When the time comes, I may sell off more, but for now all my extras or things I bought to resale need to go....Heck I may just sell it all and not touch a tool again depending on my health in 5 years....
