Edward J. Owen started the Owen China Company located in Minerva, Ohio in the early 1900's. They won a gold medal at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair for best domestic semi-porcelain. After this, the "gold metal" became a part of their maker's mark which they placed on all their pieces thereafter. They were only in business for ~30 years when they were forced to close during the Great Depression in 1932.
