Details

Up for sale is a nice old Stanley #4 type 5 hand plane. This is the first type to have a lateral adj. lever. This plane is rare as it is the only type with the L at the bottom of the lateral adj. lever, after the type 5 Stanley went with a round disc to move the blade from side to side. This plane is also the only type with 2 patent dates on the lateral adj. lever. This plane is in great shape for a 140 year old plane. The Japanning was mostly gone so I stripped off the rest and re-japanned it using Stanley's factory recipe and baked it 5 times on low heat. The sole was flat when I got it so I didn't touch it. I did sharpen the iron going through the grits up to 8000. Except for the re-Japanning I pretty much left the plane alone, sometimes less is better. The front knob is in great shape and shows the faint bead around the base of the knob. There are several small hairline cracks at the bottom of the knob but none go up very far. A previous owner has scratched his initials on one side of the plane. He also carved his initials on the Tote. Usually I would replace the tote as it is crack into in two places, but because the initials are the same as the ones on the side I decided to repair it and leave it on the plane. Also there is a very small chip out of the left side up at the toe. Look and see how many type 5's are for sale out there, not many and very few as nice as this one.
