Early 1890's Millers Falls Breast Drill

$55.00

Details

Millers Falls Paten Date Dec 13 1887 Breast Drill, 2 speed The stationary handle has been replaced at some point in the past. I got this only because it's MIllers Falls and I prefer there (and there Craftsman stamped) woodworking tools. I have not used this as due to some odd bone issues I can not push weight against my breast or stomach, I assume it's cancer, but refuse to go to DR. Anyway, I can't use this tool, even though its cool and looks like fun to use, it has just been hanging on the wall for over a year.

From the oldtoolheaven.com/millers-falls/breast_drills website No. 12: early 1890s Millers Falls No. 12 breast drill In 1887, the Millers Falls Company began fitting its No. 12 breast drills with Goodell's secondary grip. Rather than spend the money to update the illustrations in the company catalog, the company simply added text noting that the drill was equipped with the new grip. The improvement was designed to improve the drill's ability to grasp round-shanked bits by bringing extra pressure to bear on the back side of the jaws of the chuck. The chuck of the drill seen here is stamped with the date of Goodell's December 13, 1887 patent. It features the self-opening jaws patented by William H. McCoy, indicating that its manufacture postdates 1890.

The drill includes a number of other improvements not present in the No. 12 drills of the mid-80s. Its crank is now offset, providing additional clearance for a worker's hand when rotating the drive gear. Its handle is now attached with a bolt rather than peened into place. Although cheaper to produce, the older-style peened handles were more difficult to install and harder for a customer to replace.

I am selling off almost all my stuff over the next 2 years to prepare to retire and move to the Philippines. I am going on Vacation in May, so I will only be listing a few items until I get back, then if I have time I am going to work hard on selling stuff I do not need, then start on the stuff that I have no plans on taking with me.

    Selling since November 2024

Retired Archaeologist now working for city of Lexington Engineering Dept. Have been a carpenter and woodworking for some time, just switched over to hand tools several years ago. But now my health has changed, I have no kids and if Gods will, will be retiring and moving to Philippines in the next 5 Years. So I am slowly selling off tools (and other things) that I know I will not be hauling across the world. When the time comes, I may sell off more, but for now all my extras or things I bought to resale need to go....Heck I may just sell it all and not touch a tool again depending on my health in 5 years....
