Details

Brand/Manufacturer: Bastionhead Style: Bevel-down Blade Width: 7 inches Overall Width: 16.75 inches Handle Construction/Material: Elm with octagonal bandsaw finish for grip. Fastened with epoxy.

I fabricated this drawknife with a mild steel frame and a high-carbon steel blade to suit my own high standards of performance, ergonomics, and durability. It sharpens easily and holds a good edge.

Most drawknives fall into two basic categories, those that are intended to be used with the bevel facing up and those intended to be used with the bevel facing down. Bevel-up drawknives typically are better for working flat or straight areas, for instance removing bark or chamfering corners. Bevel-down drawknives are more suited to contouring work, like shaping axe handles, curvy table legs, chasing growth rings in bowmaking, or carving spoons.

This drawknife cuts bevel-down. Please be aware this drawknife is quite a bit larger and heavier than a typical vintage drawknife of comparable blade width.

I personally grind, hone, and test every drawknife I offer to ensure good cutting performance, edge retention, and ergonomics. This drawknife will ship razor sharp, ready to work, and includes a reusable plastic edge cover.

I am a full time carver, educator, and tool maker/restorer. I use tools hard, and began making drawknives because of the many design and manufacturing flaws I was constantly dealing with working with vintage ones. In addition to drawknives, I have recently begun making other carving tools including sloyds, hook knives, axes and timber framing chisels.
