B. The blade is marked Baldwin Tool Co. Smoother with no marking on the plane, so I do not know if it’s just the blade made by them or both. . I restored this nice smoother a few years ago and it’s just been sitting in my shop. It is sharpened with a slight camber for semi-rough work. The mouth is a little tight for rough work but it works as is. The mouth could be easily opened a little with a bit more camber, or you could slowly sharpened the slight camber out to make a finish smoother. In my opinion, it’s more comfortable to us than a coffin smoother and is a great user if you like using the old wooden hand planes . Austin Baldwin resigned as president in 1857 and on June 28, 1859 sold his interest to Cox & Wright and returned to New York City where he founded the Baldwin European Express Co. dealing in foreign exchange and express. The Baldwin Tool Co. became a joint stock corporation. The company was listed in 1860 as making 60,000 planes and 30,000 plane irons.
