Up for sale is a genuine antique 2-inch framing chisel by William Butcher, forged in Sheffield, England, and marked CAST STEEL.The blade is an early 19th-century crucible steel example, made for heavy timber and framing work. William Butcher was one of the major Sheffield edge-tool makers, well known for producing tough, long-wearing chisels for professional tradesmen and export to the American market.This chisel has a period American replacement handle, fitted with a stamped ferrule from the Lutz File Company of Cincinnati, Ohio. Lutz was a respected American file and tool maker active in the late 1800s to early 1900s. This type of rehandling was common and professional, and reflects a tool that stayed in working service for decades.

With over 76 years of life experience and a passion for woodworking, I’ve spent decades collecting, restoring, and working with antique hand tools, mostly hand planes . I'm an Army Vet. (1967-1969) and married with 2 children. I'm also a avid gardener. I have a degree in Forestry from S.I.U. although I only worked in the industry for 6 weeks. I'm retired from the coal mines and also the Post Office. I live in Southern Illinois near Carbondale. I love to hunt and fish. I live on 30 with a 9 acre strip mine lake in front of the house. My work shop includes a Delta Unisaw , a Grizzley 17" band saw and a DeWalt 735 planer. I have many hand planes including a very nice Stanley #2 type 7
