This unique piece of art is signed and dated by the artist, Kelly (KK) Kennedy '00 at the lower right portion. Kelly Kennedy, who died in 2008, was a renowned scrimshaw artist.

Scrimshaw is a folk art of engraving image on ivory, whale teeth, or bone, traditionally create by whalers during long voyages to pass the time. The engraved lines are then darkened with pigments like soot or ink, and the finished pieces range from utilitarian objects to decorative keepsakes.
