Antique Silver Chafing Serving Dish with Plug Hot Water Reservoir MERIDIEN Brittania 1891-1921 Made in Canada

This rare - very rare - serving dish is quadruple plated silver on copper, with a hot water tank as the base to be filled via the plug on underside. Very clever design for a single serving of something, for example scrambled eggs, to keep the contents warm. Starry vents for steam on the lid would ensure minimal heat loss, while not allowing contents to get waterlogged.

This very unusual compact design serving dish measures 10.5” wide handle to handle, 9.5” deep,and 4.5” high to top of lid. It is in fine vintage condition, with only light age related tarnish. This is very unique, in fine condition, and will prove itself useful many times over for dinner parties, breakfast in bed, special dishes to savour slowly.
