$99.99

Details

Rare and stunning SERMEL (SERgio Bustamante & MELquiades Preciado) large papier-mâché toucan. I have not seen another Toucan as a wall hanging, they are primarily standing alone or hanging on a ring.

Crafted by hand by a local artist at the Sermel Workshop in Tonala, Jalisco, Mexico, this folk-art style toucan is crafted with newspaper and branches and features VIBRANT colored paint finished with a high gloss. The sculpture is crafted as a wall hanging and has a hanger attached to the back.

Good vintage condition considering the paper medium and age of approximately 50 years. The bottom tip of the tail has the most damage (see photo) but is repairable if desired. There are two other areas of notable damage (see photos) and a few other spots of minor wear, and overall light crazing - no discolorization. PLEASE VIEW ALL PHOTOS CAREFULLY. This piece is being offered at a discount due to the damage. Please reach out if you would like additional information or photos of the condition, or would like to make a reasonable offer.

HISTORY: Sermel (for Sergio Bustamante and Melquiades Preciado) was a family-owned business established in Tonala, Jalisco, Mexico in 1963. Sermel’s original intent was to create objects of art: tin, hand painted wooden objects, furniture and of course, papel mache. Their style was bright, current color schemes, with fanciful play on the traditional decorative painting style that had defined Tonala ceramics for decades prior. Sermel quickly rose to prominence and fame in the decorative arts circles during the 60’s. This is mostly due to their work being purchased by North American and European tourists in the late 1960’s.

Sergio Bustamante left the workshop in the late 70s. Sermel became one of the premier Mexican manufacturers of papier-mâché collectibles. Sermel continued to operate under the Preciado family until 2013 with artwork crafted by talented local artists who continued the Sergio Bustamante style.

Born in Culiacan, Sinaloa, in 1942, Sergio Bustamante studied architecture at the University of Guadalajara, however, he left before he finished his degree to focus on his craft making and fine art. Bustamante had his first exhibition in 1966 at the Galeria Misrachi in Mexico City.

Bustamante is a prominent Mexican surreal artist and sculptor known for his ability to create expressive and unique works of art. His sculptures fuse elements of nature and Mexican culture, using a variety of materials such as Papier-Mâché, bronze, and ceramics. His works convey feelings of magic, vitality, and movement.

Sergio Bustamante draws inspiration from a myriad of sources, including Mexican folklore, nature, mythology, and the human condition. His rich cultural heritage and fascination with the mysteries of life are evident in his imaginative sculptures and vibrant artworks. Bustamante currently lives and works in Mexico and continues to exhibit his work internationally.

Be sure to view all photos as they are part of the description and condition. I do my best to provide descriptions and/or photos of any wear, damage, or manufacturing flaws I find to help you make your purchase decision. About me: When I retired from the corporate world in January 2022, I needed something to keep myself busy and active. During Covid, I started vintage glass treasure-hunting as a hobby and loved it so much that it felt natural to expand into a retail shop to share my finds with others. I was inspired by how online shop owners are nationally and internationally disbursed. The buying and selling marketplace here at District is the perfect opportunity to find treasures you wouldn't normally find in your backyard. I named my shop in honor of my beloved late grandmother Della, who was my first mother. I miss you, Grandma!
