Details

Fun set of two early 20th-century English fireplace toasting forks. Whether you are into toasting marshmallows over an open fire or English crumpets over your hearth, these vintage toasting forks are a definite improvement over a wooden stick or a coat hanger!

They are also perfect for wall art or fireplace or mantle decor in your maximalist, cottage-style home!

Fork 1: English Victorian-era gentleman with a walking stick. Straight smooth handle. Fork 2: English Galleon with a "Barely Twist"-style handle.

Both forks have rings on the top so they can be hung on a hook or a rack by the fireplace. Decorative figural ends unscrew on both pieces.

These forks are in excellent condition. They have patina as expected for their age, but could be polished if desired. No dents or deep scratches. Both will hang long and straight.

HISTORY: Toasting forks were initially utilitarian tools used to hold bread, crumpets, or other items over an open fire for toasting. In pre-industrial England, bread was a staple, and toasting allowed people to revive stale bread or create warm, crispy slices. Early toasting forks were often made of iron or steel and were straightforward in design, with long handles for safety and practicality.

During the Victorian period, the rise of the middle class and advancements in metalworking led to more decorative toasting forks. These were often made of brass, silver, or mixed metals and adorned with ornate designs such as scrolls, floral motifs, or family crests. In the 20th century toasting forks became more symbolic than functional, often kept as heirlooms or decorative items. Today, antique and vintage toasting forks are highly sought after by collectors. Their appeal lies in their craftsmanship, history, and connection to traditional English hearthside life.

Darling Della Vintage focuses on locally sourcing and offering high-quality vintage goods at fair prices to help vintage lovers and collectors fill their spaces with items that bring joy.

About me: When I retired from the corporate world in January 2022, I needed something to keep myself busy and active. During Covid, I started vintage glass treasure-hunting as a hobby and loved it so much that it felt natural to expand into a retail shop to share my finds with others. I was inspired by how online shop owners are nationally and internationally disbursed. The buying and selling marketplace here at District is the perfect opportunity to find treasures you wouldn't normally find in your backyard. I named my shop in honor of my beloved late grandmother Della, who was my first mother. I miss you, Grandma!
