Vintage Emil Cahoy pottery pitcher brown cream slip or marbled glaze SD 5.5”. Vintage pottery pitcher (5 1/2" tall) with brown and cream marble coloring, marked E Cahoy - Colome South Dakota. It's a lovely piece of folk art, in excellent condition This pottery was made with a formula created by Emil Cahoy from clay found six feet underground on his farm outside of Colome, South Dakota. It took him three years to perfect this mixture of clay and sand. The pottery is then fired to a very high temperature of 2150 to 2160 degrees (which qualifies as ironstone) making it stronger than bakeware and safe for the oven, microwave, or dishwasher. The process also creates a beautiful and unusual swirl effect in the pottery. The natural color comes from the minerals in the soil and varies in shades of brown depending upon the firing temperature and minerals in the soil.
