Both of these products are made by hand, by myself (a fellow woodturner) for wood turners in mind and with ONLY FOOD SAFE INGREDIENTS.
The Sanding Paste contains a blend of mineral oil, 100% natural white beeswax, and food grade abrasive. Instructions to achieve best results are below and also included with kit.
The Tung Wax Finish is a blend of Pure Tung Oil, 100% natural white beeswax, and organic carnauba wax. Most oil/wax finishes use mineral oil because it is cheap, but mineral oil will never fully cure/harden. Tung oil has been used as a wood finish by itself for centuries and praised for it's ability to penetrate into wood pores and fully cure, leaving a warm, rich finish. These properties combined with the hardness of a carnauba/beeswax blend make my homemade Tung Wax Finish a durable, long lasting finish that only takes a few minutes to apply. Tung Wax Finish is applied similar to a friction polish on the lathe. But can be applied by hand and allowed to penetrate over night for other woodworking projects that require a food safe finish such as cutting boards and charcuterie boards.
More detailed instructions, various applications, and tips are provided within each kit.
Please see the instructions below to help achieve desired results. If you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to reach out at; Bradsworkbench333@gmail.com
Lathe Instructions
1.) Sand your project to 320-400 grit.
2.) Apply a sealer and let it dry. (Shellac works well, but other sealers are fine.)
3.) Turn off your lathe and generously apply Sanding Paste using a paper towel. (It's unsafe to use a cloth rag at the lathe.)
4.) The Sanding Paste will feel "gritty" as you're first applying it. Keep rubbing the paste in with the lathe turned off. When you feel/hear grittiness dissipate, turn your lathe on, increase speed to 1000-1500 rpm, and remove all residue with a clean paper towel.
5.) Turn your lathe off and apply Tung Wax Finish over the entire project using a paper towel and allow it to sit for 10-15 minutes minimum.
6.) Turn your lathe on and use a clean paper towel to apply friction, keeping the towel in one area to build up heat. Once you see the wax beginning to melt, slowly move the paper towel down the entire project, keeping up enough pressure to keep the wax melted as you move.
When you turn your lathe off, your project will have a silky smooth finish with a hard outer shell and a beautiful, low-luster sheen.
*if you want a higher gloss finish apply more coats of shellac to reach desired gloss BEFORE applying Sanding Paste or Tung Wax Finish.
Hi there and thank you for checking out my store! Brads Workbench began as a youtube channel that reviewed budget-friendly tools for the blue collar tradesman. THEN SOMETHING AMAZING HAPPENED! Making videos ignited my love of woodworking and led me to woodturning, the more artistic side of woodcraft. Eventually, I started my new channel, Brads Woodturning and this Etsy shop where I sell my own work and supplies for other wood-turners. Who am I? I am a husband and father. I've spent my life supporting my family with my bare hands as a proud tradesman. This is me, taking my shot, from my tiny shed shop in east Texas. I'm using my two hands to build a foundation for my family. By purchasing from this store you're not just buying a unique, handcrafted item, you're supporting a craftsman. I'm chasing my dream of creating a self-supporting small business. Your support is making it possible. Thank you!
