Set of Four Largest weathered with Age 8” Smallest 2.5” The Matryoshka doll, also known as a Russian nesting doll, is a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size placed one inside another. The original Matryoshka doll was made in 1890 in Sergiyev Posad by Vasily Zvyozdochkin from a design by Sergey Malyutin, who was a folk crafts painter. These dolls became widely popular as symbols of Russian folk art and culture, often depicting peasant women in traditional dress.
Matryoshka dolls are typically made from linden wood and are hand-painted, with each doll in a set being a variation of the previous one. While many are decorative, some are crafted with intricate detail and historical significance, making them collectible. The style and quality of painting, as well as the number of dolls in a set, can influence their value.
