HISTORY: From the time of the Olmecs, between 1200 BC and 600 AD, pottery has been a central part of Mexican life. Their use of clay, knowledge of primitive firing and coloring techniques, and designs were passed down to other cultures that followed. The Olmecs are considered by many as the mother culture of Mesoamerican civilizations.

Talavera de la Reina, a Spanish village, has long influenced the world’s knowledge of fine ceramics. When the Muslims conquered North Africa and moved into Europe, their tin-glazed ceramics, known as Majolica, came to Spain. Majolica was developed in the Middle East but gained cultural diversity through influences from China, Italy, North African Moors, and Spain. Spanish craftsmen further developed this craft and in the 16th century introduced it to Mexico. The term Talavera describes the faithful reproductions of the pottery made in Talavera de la Reina, Spain.

When the Spanish introduced their stylized pottery to their recently established colony in Mexico, the local artisans blended these new techniques with their established practices to create the famous Talavera pottery of Mexico. It is believed that the first workshop was established in Puebla around 1600 AD. Puebla became the home of authentic Mexican Talavera and is where the first potter’s guilds were formed to establish standards and regulations for the production of Talavera.

Talavera is a type of majolica earthenware fired at extremely high temperatures producing a very durable product. Certified Talavera pottery is produced in Puebla, Mexico however, high-quality, modern Talavera pottery is also available from factories in other Mexican districts such as Dolores Hidalgo and Guanajuato.

IMPORTANT DDV SHOP NOTE: • All antique/vintage items in my shop are sold "as-is/as-found" and priced accordingly for their condition. I only complete a light cleaning on items allowing new owners to determine the level of aging and character they wish to preserve. This includes all metal patinas and discolorations. • All antique/vintage items are by definition “used” and usually show signs of age and/or use. Buying vintage items online assumes some risk. Be sure to view all photos as they are part of the description and condition. I do my best to provide descriptions and/or photos of any wear, damage, or manufacturing flaws I find to help you make your purchase decision. I do not accept returns unless the buyer can prove that the items weren't accurately described or photographed. • I personally research each item I sell and do my best to provide accurate information in my listings. I am a hobbyist vintage collector but not an expert, so if I missed something and you would like additional information please contact me before you buy.

Darling Della Vintage focuses on locally sourcing and offering high-quality vintage goods at fair prices to help vintage lovers and collectors fill their spaces with items that bring joy.

About me: When I retired from the corporate world in January 2022, I needed something to keep myself busy and active. During Covid, I started vintage glass treasure-hunting as a hobby and loved it so much that it felt natural to expand into a retail shop to share my finds with others. I was inspired by how online shop owners are nationally and internationally disbursed. The buying and selling marketplace here at District is the perfect opportunity to find treasures you wouldn't normally find in your backyard. I named my shop in honor of my beloved late grandmother Della, who was my first mother. I miss you, Grandma!
