RARE Antique Dugan Wreath of Roses Tri-corner Whimsey Candy Dish with Scalloped Rim in Iridescent Marigold

$34.99

Details

RARE AND STUNNING antique Dugan Wreath of Roses Tri-corner Whimsey Candy Dish in a beautiful iridescent amber color called Marigold.

The Wreath of Roses pattern consists of 4 roses around a small collar-based bowl molded into a tri-cornered bowl (3 sides pulled up) with scalloped edges and a smooth interior.

Dugan's Wreath of Roses pattern was produced in only two shapes, a small rosebowl, and a tricornered whimsey candy dish, however, occasionally through "necking" the rosebowls were turned into rarity spittoons. In 2001 a lavender-colored spittoon sold at auction for $3200.00!!

This deep candy bowl can be used as intended as a serving dish, but would also make a great vase, candle holder, or trinket dish. It is an exciting piece to add to any collection for Carnival Glass lovers.

Outstanding antique condition! Minimal signs of wear and aging. No chips, cracks, or scratches. There is a single straw mark on the bottom of the bowl, it is not a scratch, see photo. There is also some roughness to the glass at the folds of the tri-points due to the manufacturing process.

HISTORY: Dugan Glass Company began its history as the Indiana Glass Company, operating from Indiana, Pennsylvania, from 1892 to 1896. In 1896 Harry Northwood, accompanied by Samuel Dugan and his three sons (Thomas E.A., Alfred, and Samuel Jr.), took over the company and changed its name to Northwood. From 1900 to 1903 it was known as the National Glass Company, under the direction of Harry Bastow and Thomas E.A. Dugan. From 1904 to 1912, it was called the Dugan Glass Company, creating the “Diamond-D” mark for some of its pressed ware, most notably, Carnival glass. Finally, from 1913 to its closing in 1931 due to a plant fire, it was known as the Diamond Glass Company.

Later confusion in identifying exact product makers resulted from the fact that all these companies operated at various times from the same plant in Indiana, PA. In many cases, it is impossible to pinpoint the precise year an item was produced. This is why the “Dugan – Diamond” designation is often used when referring to the pieces from this factory produced from 1904-1931. Regardless of which company made them, they are among the most beautiful and highly prized in the entire Carnival spectrum.

Dugan is thought to be one of the earliest, if not the earliest, producers of carnival glass in the United States, introducing its first lines in 1904, at least a decade before Imperial. Dugan's carnival glass drew from a range of inspirations, from Tiffany in the U.S. to Loetz in Bohemia. Other lines, produced simultaneously, imitated Venetian glass and were even branded by Dugan as Venetian.

IMPORTANT DDV SHOP NOTE: • All antique/vintage items in my shop are sold "as-is/as-found" and priced accordingly for their condition. I only complete a light cleaning on items allowing new owners to determine the level of aging and character they wish to preserve. This includes all metal patinas and discolorations. • All antique/vintage items are by definition “used” and usually show signs of age and/or use. Buying vintage items online assumes some risk. Be sure to view all photos as they are part of the description and condition. I do my best to provide descriptions and/or photos of any wear, damage, or manufacturing flaws I find to help you make your purchase decision. I do not accept returns unless the buyer can prove that the items weren't accurately described or photographed. • I personally research each item I sell and do my best to provide accurate information in my listings. I am a hobbyist vintage collector but not an expert, so if I missed something and you would like additional information please contact me before you buy.

About me: When I retired from the corporate world in January 2022, I needed something to keep myself busy and active. During Covid, I started vintage glass treasure-hunting as a hobby and loved it so much that it felt natural to expand into a retail shop to share my finds with others. I was inspired by how online shop owners are nationally and internationally disbursed. The buying and selling marketplace here at District is the perfect opportunity to find treasures you wouldn't normally find in your backyard. I named my shop in honor of my beloved late grandmother Della, who was my first mother. I miss you, Grandma!
