These vintage Blenko Elephant Glass Bookends are a wonderful way to add a touch of vintage elegance to your book collection. These bookends were made in this deep Olive Green color between the years of 1969-1976. The richness of the green shifts from bright Kelly green to deep emerald green to the 'tinge of yellow' olive green depending on the light. The raised and stippled elephant design on the front side adds a unique touch and creates a nice sense of depth. Measuring 5.5 inches in length, 6.7 inches in height, and 1.5 inches in width, these medium-sized bookends are handmade and original. The design was created under the leadership of Joel Myers (Blenko, 1963-1970).
Quoting from the Blenko catalogs in the early 1970s, "Handmade glass reflects the manner in which it is formed...In some items you will see small trapped air bubbles that are formed when the glass is gathered in a rolling manner at the end of a blowpipe. The finishing tools also leave their distinctive marks where they were used, normally in the top area. The manipulation of the glass creates flow lines that are sometimes visible."
With that context provided, these two paperweights have marks indicating their hand-made origins. There are small air bubbles in both (easiest to see in the pictures from the back). Both bookends have a line across the front from finishing tools. Both have minor scuffs from usage. Please review all of the pictures for the complete sense of their beauty and condition. Thank you!
