Very unique plane! In traditional Japanese carpentry/home construction, many interior walls and almost all doors are wooden panels (shoji or fusama) that slide in slots at top and bottom of the doorway - there are few doors on hinges. As a result, when a craftsman is fitting doors and wall panels into place, there may frequently be a need to adjust the width of a dado that a panel rides in to smooth and properly fit the movement. One can imagine this would be quite the task without a tool like this!
The blade is traditional style dual layer forge welded steel, with the relatively thin brittle/hard layer set as the cutting edge for longer wear before a resharpening and the relatively softer and thicker steel of the main body welded to provide the toughness a plane blade would need to avoid breakage. The chip breaker is single layer sharpened steel, wedged into place to hold the main cutting blade to the proper setting position.
This well maintained used tool has so many interesting characteristics - I originally purchased it more than a year ago not for resale, but as a showpiece! I welcome fellow enthusiasts to enjoy unique pieces like this one, even if we're somewhat unlikely to be building a traditionally framed Japanese house with lots of shoji/fusama to properly fit!

Boy do I look old with that beard! It's gone now, but I still like the image, so there we are. I'm a woodworker who does a LOT of different things, though my last really big project was an entire kitchen/laundry of cabinets and butcherblock countertops. I have the chance through the day job to go to Japan once or twice a year, and I enjoy being able to bring some of the used tool love from there to here, so folks who watch may notice postings for some of them.
