Details
Up for auction is a James Swan 1” firmer socket chisel. Swan is a desirable name for both users and collectors and the company enjoys a strong reputation even decades after going out of business. A chisel of this size and construction is especially good for larger work like beds, dining tables, and work-benches. Overall length is 14” (with handle).
This chisel is in excellent “user” condition but might not be suitable for a serious collector. The chisel is straight and retains most of its original length. The socket is crisp and has no mushrooming around the edge. The included handle is probably original and has a heavy bronze hoop to allow heavy striking. The handle has lost much of its original finish and would benefit from restoration. Original rust has been removed. The steel is stained, but free of rust and pitting. The back of the chisel has been quickly flattened, but flattening should be continued with finer grits to leave a more polished surface. This chisel is nearly ready for work and has decades of life left in it.
This is a no-reserve auction and all the profits (after taxes, fees, and shipping) will be donated to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
