Carnival glass, also known as iridescent glass, was produced from the early 20th century until the 1930s, with its popularity peaking in the 1910s. It was often given away as prizes at carnivals and fairs, hence its name, and was also sold in department stores. The distinctive shimmering, rainbow-like surface is achieved by applying a metallic salt solution to the glass while it is still hot, creating a vibrant, colorful finish.
Imperial Glass Company, founded in 1901 in Bellaire, Ohio, was one of the major producers of carnival glass. They manufactured a wide array of patterns, including the 'Ripple' pattern, which is characterized by its vertical ribs and often found in popular colors like marigold, blue, and green. These pieces are highly sought after by collectors for their intricate designs and the unique optical effects of the iridescent finish.
