Details
Up for auction is a Disston and Sons 12” Backsaw (most likely a No. 4). A saw of this size is excellent as a tenon or carcass saw. The plate is deep enough for sawing even large tenons and the No. 4 is a classic size, still widely used even decades after Disston went out of business.
The saw is in good, restored condition. I found it very rough at a flea market and this is one of my early saw restorations. The plate and spine are rust-free. They have staining, but no pitting and the steel is smooth. The handle is original. It was found with several cracks. I filled these with epoxy and saw-dust over 10 years ago and the repairs are holding very well. The handle was finished with clear shellac and is smooth to the touch. The ergonomics of this handle are far superior to most modern saws. The brass hardware is original. The plate and spine of this saw are both straight and the saw cuts smoothly, but it would benefit from a sharpening and having the teeth set.
This is a no-reserve auction and all the profits (after taxes, fees, and shipping) will be donated to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
