$8.00

Details

The Charlie B Gallery of Carson City, Nevada is offering this weighted weedpot vase form for sale. This was created by longtime Carson City, Nevada pottery John Rotheram. From the Vasefinder Ceramic Art Museum: John Rotheram (1941-2013) was born in Ford City, Pennsylvania. In 1959, he graduated from Judge Memorial High School in Salt Lake City, Utah. As a freshman in college at the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana, he studied physics. After a year at Notre Dame, he returned to Salt Lake City to complete an undergraduate degree in Political Science with a minor in History at Westminster College. In 1966, he moved to Carson City, Nevada, where he accepted a position to be a college recruiter at Carson College. Unfortunately, the school never received funding, and it was while he was in the area, he met Wesley Martgan(aka Skip Taylor, the musician), who had ties to the Tahoe Paradise College. Wesley showed John how pots were made and that was his introduction to clay. In 1968, he moved to Silver City, New Mexico, where he was associated with the Pyramid Studios--where some pots were actually signed with a depiction of a pyramid and simply John. He left New Mexico in 1976 to return to Salt Lake City, where he resided from 1976 to 1980 and made many pots there before moving to Carson City, where he resided until 1983. While back in Carson City, he sold his functional wares through many galleries along the Tahoe shore. He also produced pots for Coast to Coast Hardware and Kmart. From 1983 to 1997, he produced very little work while he lived in Oregon and then back to Carson City in 1986. In 1998, he was offered the position as pottery instructor at the Brewery Arts Center, Carson City, Nevada, and worked there until 2007. A portion of his exhibition record includes the Park City Arts Festival on several occasions, Park City, Utah and American Furniture, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 1975. John exhibited in the Vasefinder International in the years: 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. John's work can be found in the permanent collection of the Vasefinder Ceramic Art Museum, Carson City, Nevada USA.

This vase is signed JR within circle device. There is a slight factory glaze skip at the rim as shown as well as original occurring firing lines in the foot of the pot which is also shown with factory polishing. Natural asymmetry is found in the form. I do not detect any post-studio chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. This will be shipped using the double box process.
