Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, Prepared/Edited by Arthur Burrell, PLUS Ephemera

$17.75

Details

I am not a book collector and have little knowledge about appropriate terminology for listing antique or collectible books. I found this book in a trunk at my dad's house (smoke and pet free) after he passed away. It may have belonged to my great aunt who was a teacher in the 1900s.

Inscription: Mary Antoinette Hayes, December 1909

NOTE: I've listed the year printed as 1909 because there are dates written inside the book and on the ephemera that include 1909. I'm not sure if it was printed in 1909 or prior.

Please read details and look closely at pictures.

Title Page: Everyman's Library Edited by Ernest Rhys, Poetry and Drama, Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, prepared and edited by Arthur Burrell, M. A.

Publisher: J.M. Dent, London, also New York

Included ephemera:

  1. Card with illustration, "The Monk" - "Now certainly he was a fair prelate." and inscribed "Literature Department, November 23(?), 1909

  2. Advertisement? - E. Crow and Son, The Library, Canterbury Pilgrims to Canterbury, painted by Thomas Stothard, R.A., engraved by Lewis Shicavonetti and finished by J. Heath, A.R.A. with a list of what appears to be available paintings? Maybe I'm misinterpreting this?

The book: Slightly tattered cover and loose sewn binding with some cracks in spine, but still intact. Other than the inscription, I've found no other signs of writing inside the book. Pages are obviously yellowed, but no other signs of damage (at least to my eye).

Please, please look closely at pictures and feel free to ask questions!

I'm a retired teacher trying to clean out my house of all the stuff accumulated from four generations of my family. My goal in life is to not leave a mess for my family to clean up after I die! I've sold on other platforms for a few years now, but after watching Joselyn's videos I decided to try NikNax. I love to see thrifting videos since I've always shopped at thrift stores, passing on that love to my daughter. I also love to see what others have to sell and have been known to buy some things that I just can't pass up, of course adding to more "stuff."

All of my items come from a smoke-free home. We have one cat that I try to keep away from things that I'm selling, especially clothing or other items that could collect cat dander.
