Brand/Manufacturer: Bastionhead Style: Bevel Down Blade Width: 3.5 inches (approximately) Overall Width: 14 inches Handle Construction/Material: Cherry with bandsawn finish. Fastened with epoxy.
The Bastionhead Spoon Shave is essentially a small bevel-down drawknife that has the handles swept out to about 45 degrees instead of closer to 90 degrees like most drawknives. This handle sweep gives more clearance between the handles and the workpiece in many instances, and also makes them excel at push cutting. These nimble carving tools have thinner blades than our larger drawknives, which gives them a narrower bevel at the same grind angle, increasing their ability to cut tight-radius concaves. They are superb for spoon carving, especially shaping the neck. I also find them excellent for shaping the palmswells of axe handles. While they are quite capable for a small tool and can remove material with remarkable speed in skilled hands, they are not intended to be used with extreme force.
I make these tools to suit my own high standards of performance, ergonomics, and durability. They hold a good edge and sharpen easily.
Each Spoon Shave is handmade by me. I personally grind, hone, and test every blade I offer to ensure good cutting performance, edge retention, and ergonomics. This Spoon Shave ships razor sharp, ready to work, and includes a reusable plastic edge cover.

I am a full time carver, educator, and tool maker/restorer. I use tools hard, and began making drawknives because of the many design and manufacturing flaws I was constantly dealing with working with vintage ones. In addition to drawknives, I have recently begun making other carving tools including sloyds, hook knives, axes and timber framing chisels.
