1st ed. HC. A volume in celebration of the completion of the first segment of the Interborough Rapid Transit underground railroad, the first regularly operated subway in New York City.
Construction of the subway began in 1900. The 1st day of operation was October 1904, w the opening of all stations from City Hall to 145th Street & Broadway on West Side Branch. Subway riders were not entirely thrilled w the new service; a 1905 cartoon depicts a crowded platform &subway car labeled as the "Interborough Rattled Transit".
Illustrated w numerous large b&w printed photos of construction of the IRT. Contents include: the route; methods of construction; power house construction; the electrical supply; lighting systems for stations and tunnels; rolling stock; signals system; repair shed; list of Subcontractors.
