That Old-Time Religion, by Reader's Digest, is a comprehensive multi-record boxed set compilation featuring a wide array of classic gospel and inspirational songs performed by renowned artists from the country and sacred music worlds. This extensive collection stands out for its impressive scope, drawing together performances by stars such as George Beverly Shea, Anita Bryant, Jim Reeves, Burl Ives, and the Blackwood Brothers Quartet, Dolly Parton, among many others, to deliver a nostalgic celebration of traditional hymns, spirituals, and gospel favorites. A unique aspect is its focus on "old-time" religious music, blending timeless staples like the title track Give Me That Old-Time Religion with enduring pieces such as In the Sweet By-and-By, Bringing in the Sheaves, Precious Memories, and Will the Circle Be Unbroken. These songs, many of which are beloved fan-favorites in gospel and country traditions, evoke the heartfelt, revival-style worship that defined early 20th-century American sacred music. The album holds historical significance as part of Reader's Digest's popular series of curated, family-oriented music collections that brought professionally recorded, faith-based selections directly to homes through mail-order, helping preserve and popularize these classic religious songs for a broad audience in the mid-1970s.
