Pair of Hand Carved "Barley Twist" Candlesticks

Vintage pair of hand carved spiral candlestick holders. The candlestick's design if often referred to as "barley twist" and it highlights the natural grain and warm tones of the olive wood it's carved from.

These candle holders are often made by artisans in the Holy Land, specifically in Bethlehem or Israel, from the wood of local olive trees. The process of creating them involves using pruned branches, which allows the trees to continue to grow. The unique grain and color of the olive wood make each piece distinct.

This technique has been used for centuries, so it's hard to determine exactly how old they are but based on some of the imperfections its likely that they were cut by hand and therefore were made in the mid-late twentieth century.
