Old Town in the Green Groves - Laura Ingalls Wilder The "Lost" Little House Years
Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote nine legendary Little House books about her childhood on the American frontier, but there were two years she chose to leave out. These "lost" years take place between On the Banks of Plum Creek and By the Shores of Silver Lake. When a devastating grasshopper plague returns to Plum Creek, Pa knows the crops are ruined once again. Forced to leave their farm, the Ingalls family travels east to Burr Oak, Iowa, where Pa has found work helping to manage a hotel.
For the first time since leaving the Big Woods of Wisconsin, the family’s westward trek is halted. In the bustling "old town," Laura experiences a life far different from the open prairie, helping Ma with chores in a busy hotel and navigating the noise of a town next to a rowdy saloon.
Through heartbreak and new beginnings—including the loss of a baby brother and the birth of sister Grace—Laura never stops longing for the freedom of the tall-grass prairie. If the family can save enough money, they might just find their way back to the unsettled West where Pa can play his fiddle in the open air once more.
