The Way it Was, The Way it Is, is the sixteenth studio album by American R&B singer Lou Rawls, marking a significant point in his career with Capitol Records. Produced by David Axelrod, the album features a blend of soul, jazz, and pop, highlighted by tracks like Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa (Sad Song) and Your Good Thing (Is About to End), which became chart successes. The album includes a notable cover of Donovan’s Season of the Witch, showcasing Rawls’ versatility and Axelrod’s innovative production with subtle guitar, organ, and orchestral flourishes. Despite its critical acclaim, the album peaked at No. 103 on the Billboard Top LPs & Tape chart and has not received a proper CD release. This collaboration between Rawls and Axelrod is celebrated for its creative arrangements and Rawls’ powerful, emotive baritone delivery.
