This is a lovely antique (circa late 19th century) Japanese Dragon Netsuke, thought to be from the Meiji period. The circular patina metal disc is embossed and chased with a scrolling dragon within a plain beige colored bowl.

The Netsuke, or button/toggle like object, was likely strung by chains onto a silk or leather pouch (Kagamibuta) with wonderful, fierce brass dragons on the front as well. (See 3rd, 4th, and 5th example pictures)

Since most men in Japan wore pocketless kimonos, pouches were often used for storing tobacco and were generally worn from a belt. Netsuke (meaning “to attach the root”) allowed them to securely fasten hanging pouches to a kimono sash.

Condition: Some slight discoloration caused by age and wear, otherwise good condition.
