John Martinez is best known for his popular, stylized opera images rendered in gouache and pencil. Created strictly for pleasure, they were first brought to the public’s attention in a series of framed prints commissioned by New York’s Metropolitan Opera Guild in 1991. He further expanded his audience with the publication of fine silkscreen posters that established his reputation worldwide. Martinez is an artist, designer and art director whose vast body of work spans film, television, the Internet and various print media. He is the recipient of awards and honors from many professional organizations, including the Society of Illustrators, the Art Directors Club and Print magazine. His work is in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress and The Museum of Modern Art, New York, which honored him for best art direction in their broadcast advertising show of 1994. These silkscreen posters are primarily done in gouache and pencil.
