Details

Copiapoa tenuissima is endemic to south of Antofagasta, Northern Chile. It is native to the coastal deserts on the steep mountain base among fragmented stones. The long tuberous root of this copiapoa is buried deeply in these soils which are very poor in organic matter. In the area where these plants grow there is very little rain. In this coastal desert climate, the early morning is fog provides a significant part of the water they need. By the middle of the morning however, the fog cover dissipates and sun breaks through the gaps warming the ground. The common presence in habitat of plants with juvenile spination forms on old taproots is due to the frequent grazing damage inflicted by donkeys and Guanacos. Copiapoas are rare and are one of the most desired cacti that every collector should have. They are one of the easiest cacti to grow, they require much less water than common cacti and are a summer grower species. Considering that tenuissima comes from a habitat with an extremely arid climate, they are remarkably tolerant of pot culture, but susceptible to overwatering. They require appropriate air circulation. It is a slow growing cactus kept for the beauty of its form that will make clumps given the best conditions. It likes very coarse mineral cactus mix soil, but can become too elongated if compost is too rich. Use a pot with very good drainage, make extra holes if necessary. It requires light but regular waterings in summer, but let the soil mix dry between waterings, DO NOT overwater, it must be kept dry throughout the winter. They need to be kept in a cool place during winter rest and are resistant to light frost if kept on the dry prior to, and during cold weather. Not tolerant of prolonged periods of frost. Requires full sun or light shade, tends to bronze in strong light, which encourages flowering and heavy spine production. Light shadow may be useful in the hottest summer days.
