Back At One, by Brian McKnight, is widely regarded as his signature album and a cornerstone of late-1990s R&B, blending smooth soul, adult contemporary, and pop elements with his trademark falsetto and intricate piano work. The record is historically significant for producing McKnight’s biggest commercial breakthrough, driven by the timeless title track Back at One, which became a wedding staple and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 while spending eight weeks at No. 1 on the Hot Adult Contemporary chart. Other fan-favorites include the tender ballad 6, 8, 12, the upbeat You Should Be Mine (Don’t Waste Your Time) featuring Mase, and the romantic Last Dance. A unique aspect of the album is the title song’s clever lyrical structure that counts the reasons he loves his partner (one through five) before restarting the cycle, a gimmick that made it instantly memorable and widely covered. The project solidified McKnight as one of the premier balladeers of his generation and remains his best-selling and most celebrated work.
