Crackle glass, also known as ice glass or network glass, is a decorative glass technique where molten glass is plunged into cold water, causing it to fracture. It is then reheated and blown into a mold, encasing the crackled layer within a clear or colored outer layer. This process creates a unique, web-like pattern of fine cracks throughout the glass. The technique became popular in the mid-20th century for creating decorative items like vases, bowls, and figurines.
Amber glass has a long history, with early examples dating back to Roman times. However, the specific amber hue seen in many mid-century decorative pieces often resulted from the addition of sulfur or iron compounds during the glassmaking process. This color was particularly favored for its warm, inviting appearance and its ability to mimic natural materials like amber resin.
